Gate motor repairs and installation in Kempton Park

The motor is chosen for the gate, not the other way round. What decides it is the gate's weight, how far it travels and how often it opens, so we look at the gate before we quote. A sliding gate of up to 500 kg is within the rating of each kit below; a long, heavy gate on a smallholding, or a yard gate in Spartan that opens all day, may need a Centurion D10, built for gates up to 1,000 kg.

On the day, the gate is checked for free running first; then the base plate goes in, the rack goes on, the open and closed limits are set and your remotes are coded. The battery is what makes a gate motor work in a power cut, and it's also the part that wears out on schedule. Signs it's going: the gate slows, the motor beeps, or it opens once in an outage and then won't close.

Before replacing it, we check that the charger is putting power back in, because a battery that never gets charged properly dies early whatever its make. For a gate that has to keep going through long cuts, there are two upgrades: a lithium battery in place of the usual lead-acid one, or a solar panel or extra backup on a site where the mains is unreliable or far away, as on some smallholdings. On a sliding gate, the motor only pushes; the gate has to roll. We check the parts that let it:

• The rail, which has to be straight, level and fixed down along its whole length.
• The wheels, which wear flat or seize, so the gate drags.
• The guide rollers at the top, which keep the gate upright and stop it leaning onto the motor.
• The end stops, which stop the gate running off the end of its rail.
• The rack, which can work loose, wear or lose its line with the pinion.

On a long smallholding gate, each of these carries more weight over more metres, and a small fault becomes a big load on the motor. If the gate has jumped its rail, see sliding gate off track before trying to move it.
