Fault finder

Find the likely fault before you book

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

1 · What's not working?

2 · What's it doing?

3 · Likely causes

Gate motor · it's beeping

Most likely first

  1. The mains power to the motor is off, so it's running on its battery. Centurion and Gemini motors give two beeps (or two flashes) in a row; an ET Drive flashes twice and gives a one-second beep every 15 seconds.

  2. The battery is low. Centurion and Gemini motors give three beeps in a row; an ET Drive's status light flashes four times, without a beep.

  3. Something is between the safety beams. A Centurion motor gives a single beep every so often and won't close.

  4. The gate has hit something several times in a row, so the motor has stopped to protect itself. A Centurion keeps beeping until that's cleared.

  5. A holiday lockout or a time setting is blocking the remote: the motor beeps once when you press it and the gate doesn't move.

  6. On a Gemini, four beeps as the motor starts means the manual release lever isn't fully engaged.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

If it keeps beeping with the power on and the beams clear, the battery, charger or controller needs a technician. Don't open the motor: Centurion warns that work by anyone unauthorised may void the manufacturer's warranty.

About Repairs Plus

Repairs Plus repairs and installs the things that let people in and keep others out: gate motors, garage door motors, electric fences, intercoms, CCTV and steel fencing. We bring 10 years of experience in gate motor installation and repairs. We have helped hundreds of customers across Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

Most of our work is the call nobody plans for: a gate stuck halfway on a weekday morning, a garage door that won't come down at night, a fence alarm that keeps going off. Our technicians find the fault, give you the price before any work starts, and then fix it. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair comes with our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

We're a service-area business, so we come to you: houses, townhouse complexes, estates with a gatehouse, and business premises.

Brands we work on

On gates and garage doors we work on Centurion, ET (Nice), Gemini, Digidoor, DTS and Nice/Hansa motors. On electric fences, Nemtek and JVA energisers; on CCTV, Hikvision, HiLook and Dahua; on intercoms, Centurion, BPT, Commax, Zartek and Kocom.

Each of the big gate and garage brands has its own page: Centurion, ET, Gemini and Digidoor, with the models we see most and what usually goes wrong with them. The full list is on the brands page.

Manuals and fault guides

Plenty of gate and garage problems can be sorted without a technician, if you know where to look. Our manual library explains the official manuals in plain English: the ET Drive 500 manual, the Centurion gate motor manuals, the Gemini gate motor manuals and more, each linking to the manufacturer's own PDF.

The fault guides start from what you're seeing: a gate motor that's beeping, a gate that won't open, trouble after load-shedding. Each gives the checks that are safe to do yourself, and says when to stop and call us.

Emergencies, day or night

24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng. A gate stuck open after dark, a garage door that won't close with the car inside, or an electric fence alarm going off at 2 a.m. are all emergency calls: tick "It's urgent" on the job card or WhatsApp us, and we'll tell you when a technician can be there.

Same-day repairs are part of the normal week too, whenever the day's bookings allow. The emergency repairs page has what to do while you wait, including how to release a gate motor and lock the gate by hand.

Questions

Questions we're asked most

Do you repair all gate motor and garage door motor brands?

We work on the motors most Gauteng gates and garages run on: Centurion, ET, Gemini, Digidoor, DTS and Nice/Hansa. If yours is a different make, tell us the brand and model when you book (a photo of the motor helps) and we'll say straight away whether we can help. See the brands we work on.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover 21 areas: Johannesburg and its northern suburbs from Sandton, Randburg and Fourways to Midrand and Kyalami, Roodepoort in the west, Alberton in the south, Bedfordview, Edenvale, Benoni and the East Rand, and Centurion. Find your area.

How quickly can a technician get to me?

It depends on where you are and how full the day is, so we give you a time when we call or WhatsApp you back after you book. Same-day repairs are part of our normal week, and for a gate or garage stuck open at night there are 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng. Book a technician.

What should I check before I book a repair?

Check the simple things first: that there's power at the motor's plug or isolator, that the status light shows the battery isn't flat, that the remote's own battery works, that nothing is in the gate's path and that the safety beams face each other and are clean. Stop there: never open an energiser, touch mains wiring or loosen garage door springs. Work through the fault guides.

Can I open my gate or garage door when the power is off?

Yes. A sliding gate motor has a key-operated release that frees the gate so you can slide it by hand, and most garage door motors have a release cord or lever that lets you lift the door; lock the gate again afterwards, because a released motor leaves it free to open. See how to open a gate by hand.
