Gemini gate motor repairs and installation
We repair and install Gemini sliding and swing gate motors and Gemini garage door operators across Johannesburg, the East Rand and Centurion: control cards, pulse sensors, gearboxes, batteries and remotes. Here's how the range differs, what usually stops a Gemini, and what the kits cost.

The Gemini range
Gemini's sliders share an oil-filled worm-drive gearbox and a 17-tooth pinion; what changes is the motor, the battery and how heavy and busy a gate each is built for.
| Model | Use | Heaviest gate | Openings a day | Motor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slider 500 | Homes | 500 kg | 150 | 12 V DC |
| 24V Slider 600 | Heavier home gates | 600 kg | 250 | 24 V DC |
| 24V Slider 800 | Light industrial | 800 kg | 400 | 24 V DC, two batteries |
| 24V DC Swing | Homes | Leaves up to 2 m | 30 | 24 V DC |
Gemini also makes garage door operators for sectional, tip-up and roll-up doors, an older AC slider, a complex receiver and wireless safety beams. The settings and wiring for each are on the Gemini manual page.
How a Gemini is set up
A Gemini has no display. Its behaviour is set on the control card with DIP switches and a small dial:
- Auto-close: four DIP switches choose a delay from 2 to 60 seconds, or off. Taking the auto-close loop off the connector block switches it off whatever the switches say.
- Obstruction sensitivity: a dial on the card. Clockwise makes the gate less sensitive, anticlockwise more.
- Motor direction: one DIP switch, set by which side of the gate the motor stands on, seen from inside the property facing the road.
- Townhouse function: ignores every command except the beams and obstruction sensing while the gate is opening and waiting to close.
- Remotes: the on-board receiver holds 30. When it's full, its LED flashes five times and nothing more can be added until the memory is cleared.
Every one of these lives on the control card under the cover, beside the battery and the power connections, so we set them on site.

What usually stops a Gemini
A Gemini's status light, and its buzzer if one is fitted, flash in groups that point to the fault: two for a mains supply problem, three for a low battery, four when the motor is triggered with the release lever not engaged or a faulty reed switch, and a single flash about five seconds after closing when the gate hasn't fully closed. The full list, with what to check for each, is on Gemini gate motor problems.
Beyond those, Gemini's maintenance notes point at the gate itself:
- wheels that seize on the track, or a gate running without roller guides
- a rack sitting on the pinion instead of 2 mm above it
- missing end stoppers, which Gemini says must never be left off
- insects, water, mud and sand inside the motor
The pulse sensor, which counts the motor's turns so the card knows where the gate is, is a part that can be replaced on its own. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

Batteries, solar and phone control
Every Gemini slider runs from its battery, which the mains keeps charged, so it carries on through a power cut. The spec sheets give a 12 V 8 Ah battery for the Slider 500 and two for the 24 V sliders, and Gemini's openings-a-day figures assume a gate that needs less than half the motor's full force: a stiff gate and a tired battery give fewer.
The sliders are listed as solar compatible and GSM compatible, and work with Gemini's Gemlink Smart, which comes with the 24 V Slider 600 and 800. If you want the gate on solar power or opened from a phone, tell us on the job card and we'll quote for it.
Gemini garage door operators
Gemini's 24 V garage door operator is built for homes: Gemini rates it for about 20 openings a day, it runs on two small 12 V batteries through a power cut, and its obstruction sensing is set separately for opening and closing. The newer limit-learning roll-up operator is for single roll-up doors no wider than 2,550 mm.
As with any garage motor, the door has to be balanced and run freely by hand first. If it doesn't, the motor stops or reverses as if something were in the way, and the fix is the door: see garage door repairs.

Questions
Gemini questions
How do I set the GEMINI gate motor to automatically close?
Auto-close is set with four DIP switches on the control card, from 2 to 60 seconds, and only works while the auto-close loop is in place on the connector block. The card sits under the cover beside the power connections, so we set it on site. See how a Gemini is set up.
How to reset the Gemini gate motor?
Gemini's manual has no factory reset: its settings are DIP switches and a sensitivity dial, so a gate that misbehaves after a power cut usually needs those checked rather than reset. Clearing every remote is done by holding the LEARN button until the receiver LED goes off. Read what usually stops a Gemini.
How much oil does a Gemini gate motor take?
Gemini's gearbox is oil-filled and comes with its own bottle: the manual says to remove the oil plug, cut the bottle's tip and squeeze it into the fill hole before the motor's first run. It doesn't give a volume, so use the bottle supplied with the motor. See the Gemini range.
Where can I find the manual for the GEMINI gate motor?
Gemini publishes its manuals and specification sheets on geminigates.co.za, and our Gemini manual page explains them in plain English with links to each official PDF. Go to the Gemini manuals.
Why does my Gemini beep four times when I press the remote?
Four beeps or flashes when the motor is triggered mean it thinks the release lever isn't engaged. Close and lock the red release lever, then move the gate slowly by hand until the gearbox clicks in. If it still beeps four times, the reed switch that senses the lever needs replacing. Read what usually stops a Gemini.
Can a Gemini gate motor run on solar power?
Gemini lists its sliders as solar compatible, so a gate without a mains point nearby can be charged from a solar panel instead. The panel and its charging parts are quoted for your site. See batteries and solar.
Can you install a Gemini gate motor for me?
Yes: our Gemini 12 V DC slider kit is installed with battery, rack and remotes at the price on the kit card, and we install the 24 V sliders and swing motors on quote. See the kit.
