Why is my gate motor beeping?

A beeping gate motor isn't just complaining: it's telling you what's wrong, in a code its maker publishes. Count the beeps, note how often they repeat, and the table for your motor below will usually name the problem, and often the fix.

First, count

Before anything else, stand by the motor and note three things:

  1. How many beeps come together: one, two, three, four or five.
  2. How often the group repeats, and whether it stops after half a minute or so.
  3. What the gate does when you press the remote: nothing, a short move, or a normal open.

If your intercom has a gate status light, count its flashes too: on most motors the light and the buzzer give the same signal. Then find your motor below.

Centurion D5-Evo and D10

Centurion's motors have one of the most detailed beep codes, and its manual lists them in order of priority, so the most serious condition is the one you hear:

Centurion D5-Evo and D10 buzzer signals, from Centurion's manuals
What you hearWhat it means
A continuous toneAn alarm: the beams were broken with the break-in or ambush alarm set
Three beeps, repeated for about 30 secondsBattery low
Beeping that carries on until it's clearedMultiple collisions: the gate hit something several times
Two beeps, repeated for about 30 secondsNo mains power to the charger
One beep, repeated for about 30 seconds, gate won't moveHoliday lockout or an emergency stop is on, or something is between the beams
One beep for about 5 secondsThe remote or input is time-barred at this hour
Three short beeps for 5 secondsThe gate's travel limits haven't been set
Four beeps for about 10 secondsThe gate has stalled
Five beeps, repeatedA hardware fault: beams not working, a blown fuse, the motor disconnected or an overload

On a low battery, Centurion has the gate close fully and then shut down for a couple of minutes, so a beeping motor that won't open in a power cut is usually doing exactly what it should.

ET Drive 500 and 600

ET's Drive motors beep far less, and lean on their status light instead:

  • A one-second beep every 15 seconds, for about five minutes after the gate last moved, with the light giving two flashes and a pause: the mains is off. Restore it as soon as you can.
  • Five rapid beeps each time you press the remote, matching five rapid flashes: a lock-out is on. ET's fix is to press and release any remote button set up as the holiday lockout, then any button set up to open the gate.
  • Four flashes and no beep: the battery is low. ET advises at least 8 to 10 hours of uninterrupted charging before you check it again.

So an ET that beeps every 15 seconds is almost always a power problem, and one that beeps five times is almost always the lockout.

Gemini sliders

Gemini's 12 V and 24 V DC sliders can have a buzzer fitted, and it uses a short code:

  • About one beep a second while the gate moves: normal; it's simply warning that the gate is moving.
  • Two beeps in a row: a problem with the mains supply.
  • Three beeps in a row: low battery voltage.
  • One beep about five seconds after the gate closes: the gate isn't fully closed.
  • Four beeps when you press the remote: the manual release lever isn't fully engaged, or its sensor is faulty.

The four-beep signal is the one you can usually fix yourself: put the release lever fully back into its locked position, as the manual shows, and try again.

DTS and other motors

We don't have DTS's manual in our sources, so we won't guess at its codes. The pattern on most motors is similar, though: two beeps usually point to power, three to the battery, and a repeated single beep to the beams or a lockout. Count the beeps, send us a short video on WhatsApp, and we'll tell you what it means.

Beeping and not opening

Most calls about a beeping gate are really about a gate that won't open. The usual combinations, and what to check:

  • Power and battery beeps (two or three): check the property has power and the motor's plug or isolator is on, then give the battery time to charge. If it's still beeping after a night with power, the battery or the charger has failed; see gate motor batteries.
  • A single repeated beep: clear anything between the beams, wipe their lenses, and make sure no lockout or emergency stop is on.
  • Collision beeps: clear the rail and the gate's path, then press the remote once; a valid command clears the count on Centurion's motors.
  • Five beeps on a Centurion: a hardware fault. Leave it to us.

More on each cause is in our guide to a gate motor that isn't working.

Don't just silence it

It's tempting to disconnect the battery or the buzzer to stop the noise, especially at night. Don't: a disconnected battery leaves the gate with no back-up in the next outage, and the beep is the first clue to what has gone wrong. If it's the mains beep and the power is off across the street, it will stop by itself; Centurion's mains and battery warnings each run for about 30 seconds at a time.

When to call us

Call us when the beeping points to hardware (five beeps on a Centurion), when it carries on after the power is back and the battery has had a night to charge, or when you've cleared the beams and the path and it still won't run. Don't open the motor or its controller: fuses, chargers and boards are a technician's job.

The full codes for each model

Every maker prints its signals in the manual, and ours walk through them model by model. For Centurion, start with the D5-Evo troubleshooting page, then the D5-Evo, D10 and D5 SMART manuals. ET owners will find the Drive 500 error codes on our ET manual page, and Gemini owners the Gemini troubleshooting page beside the Gemini manuals.

Getting it fixed

On the job card, say how many beeps you hear, how often, and the motor's make; a short video helps most. Same-day repairs are offered when the day allows, and every repair comes with our six-month guarantee on our repairs. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Gate motor · it's beeping

Most likely first

  1. The mains power to the motor is off, so it's running on its battery. Centurion and Gemini motors give two beeps (or two flashes) in a row; an ET Drive flashes twice and gives a one-second beep every 15 seconds.

  2. The battery is low. Centurion and Gemini motors give three beeps in a row; an ET Drive's status light flashes four times, without a beep.

  3. Something is between the safety beams. A Centurion motor gives a single beep every so often and won't close.

  4. The gate has hit something several times in a row, so the motor has stopped to protect itself. A Centurion keeps beeping until that's cleared.

  5. A holiday lockout or a time setting is blocking the remote: the motor beeps once when you press it and the gate doesn't move.

  6. On a Gemini, four beeps as the motor starts means the manual release lever isn't fully engaged.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

If it keeps beeping with the power on and the beams clear, the battery, charger or controller needs a technician. Don't open the motor: Centurion warns that work by anyone unauthorised may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions

Questions about beeping gate motors

Why is my gate motor beeping?

It's reporting a condition: on most motors two beeps mean no mains power, three a low battery, and a repeated single beep the beams or a lockout. Read the codes.

Why is my Centurion gate motor beeping and not opening?

Usually a lockout or broken beams (one beep), a low battery in a power cut (three beeps), or multiple collisions. Five beeps means a hardware fault. Read Centurion's codes.

Why does my ET gate motor beep five times?

A lock-out is on. Press and release the remote button set up as the holiday lockout, then any button that opens the gate. Read ET's signals.

Why is my DTS gate motor beeping?

We don't have DTS's manual, so we won't guess its codes; on most motors two beeps point to power and three to the battery. Send us a video. Read more.

Why does my Gemini gate motor beep four times?

Its manual release lever isn't fully engaged, or the sensor that checks it is faulty. Lock the lever fully back in place and try again. Read Gemini's signals.
