ET Drive 500 faults: encoder stall, E01, aux and limit errors
An ET Drive 500 or 600 tells you what's wrong in words on its display. Here is every fault message in ET's installer manual, grouped by what causes it, with what each means and what to do, from encoder stalls to 12 V aux errors.

How to read a Drive fault
The control card under the motor cover shows a message on its display when something goes wrong, and keeps the last 30 faults under "Controller info" in the advanced menu, so a fault that came and went can still be read later.
ET names its faults in words. The one numbered message in its list is the overload, "Gate Ovrload E1" and more characters, which is why people search for codes like E01; the manual doesn't break the numbers down, so match the words on the display to the groups below.
On a Drive 600 mains power comes into the motor: leave the terminal cover alone. The dashboard and its keys are explained on the ET Drive 500 and 600 manual.
Encoder stall and overload faults
An encoder on the motor measures how far the gate moves. If the gate stops while the motor pushes, the Drive reports a stall; if the motor has to push harder than it learnt during setup, an overload.
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Open Stall(enc), Close Stall(enc) | The gate stopped moving while opening or closing: the encoder no longer counted | Look for what is binding the gate |
| Ramp Open Stall | The gate stalled as it started to open | Remove the obstruction |
| Open Run Ovload, Close Run Ovload | Overload at full speed | Remove the obstruction |
| Open Slo Ovload, Close Slo Ovload | Overload while crawling near the end | Remove the obstruction |
| Gate Ovrload E1… | The gate overloaded | Look for an obstruction first |
| Collision Lckout | More than four collisions in a row; triggers ignored for 10 seconds | Clear the gate's path and wait |
| Backing Off | The motor backs off after an overload so the gears don't jam | Remove the obstruction |
| Encoder error | The encoder couldn't be read | The control card and ring magnet need checking |
With nothing in the way, a stall almost always means the gate itself: a seized wheel, a bent rail, a dropped guide roller or the rack riding on the pinion. Release the motor and push the gate by hand to find the stiff spot. ET suggests raising the overload setting for an overloading gate, but a less sensitive setting is also a less safe one, so rule out the gate first.

Power, battery and 12 V aux errors
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Aux voltage low | The 12 V auxiliary output is too low | An accessory is drawing too much current, or a hardware fault |
| Aux voltage high | The 12 V auxiliary output is too high | An outside connection is feeding voltage in, or a hardware fault |
| Charg supply low | Too little supply for the charger, which needs at least 16 V | Check the transformer or power supply |
| ERROR: No PSU or Battery | No power supply or battery attached | Check the wiring |
| No hi cur source | Nothing to run the motor from | Make sure the battery or the power supply is connected |
| BAT voltage high | Battery voltage too high, often a charger fault | Have the charger checked |
| Battery short | A short on the battery output | A faulty battery or battery wiring |
| PSU voltage high | Supply voltage too high | The mains input must be under 245 V AC |
| Power error braking, Power error resetting | About to shut down on low power | Low AC, power supply and battery voltages |
| Over temperature | The control card overheated | Clears when it cools |
The 12 V auxiliary output powers the beams, keypads and other accessories, up to 500 mA. An aux low reading usually means one of them has failed or shorted; a technician disconnects them one at a time to find which.
Checking the mains supply itself, on a Drive 600 or anywhere a mains voltage is suspect, is a job for a registered electrician.
Limit and setup errors
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Limit faulty | The limit sensor isn't found where expected | The limit sensor needs checking |
| Limit Range Err | The closed limit isn't within range | The actuator has moved or the rack has jumped: refasten the actuator |
| Run-time NOT set, Program Run-time | No run-time setup yet | Do the run-time setup |
| Gate re-profile required | A change means the gate must be relearnt | Do the run-time setup again |
| Learn Error Beam | Setup stopped because the beams were broken | Clear the beams and restart |
| Learn Error Gate Too Long | Gate travel over 40 m | Reduce the opening distance and restart |
| Learn Error Gate Too Short | Gate travel under 1 m | Increase the opening distance and restart |
| Learn Error Manual Released | The release lever was operated during setup | Re-engage the motor and restart |
| Manual Released | The release lever is open | Re-engage the release |
A limit error that keeps returning usually means the actuator on the rack has worked loose or the rack has jumped on the pinion. Run-time setup is explained on the ET manual page.
Receiver, remote and comms errors
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ERROR: RF comms | No data from the receiver | If it persists, the control card needs repair |
| Erase address Comms Error, Erase ALL Comms Error | The card couldn't talk to the receiver module | If it persists, the control card needs repair |
| Remote not Learnt | The remote couldn't be learnt | Use a working ET Blue or ET BLU MIX remote |
| Learn Remote Err: Time-out, RSSI TimeOut | No remote detected within 2 seconds | Hold the remote button down while you press enter |
| Learn Remote Err: Decode error | Not an ET remote | Only ET Blue and ET BLU MIX remotes work |
| Signal: Not recognised | A remote the receiver doesn't know | Code it into the receiver |
| TX already in memory | That remote is already stored at another address | Each remote takes one address |
Beams, lock-outs and the five beeps
- Beam interrupted: the beam was broken; clear the opening.
- Check beams: a beam fault is stopping pedestrian auto-close.
- Enable beam for auto-close: auto-close needs beams, by design.
- IEC Mode Error No Beams: IEC mode is on but the beams are missing.
- Holiday LOCKED: holiday lock-out is on.
Five quick flashes of the status light, with the buzzer beeping in time each time a remote is pressed, mean a lock-out is active. ET's user manual says to press any holiday lock-out button, then any BT button, to switch it off. The other status light patterns are on the ET manual page.
The installation manual
ET's installation manual for the Drive 500 and 600, a free PDF, covers installation, wiring, every menu and the fault tables this page is drawn from: ET Drive 500 / Drive 600 sliding gate operator, installer manual. The user manual has the status light table and the alarms: ET Drive 500 and 600 user manual.
Call us when a fault keeps coming back, when it points to the control card, the encoder or the charger, or when you'd rather not open the motor at all. We repair Drive 500 and 600 control cards, chargers, receivers and gearboxes. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair comes with our six-month guarantee on our repairs.
Questions
ET Drive 500 fault questions
What does it mean when the status light on my ET 500 gate motor is flashing?
A 1-second flash means the gate is running; two flashes then a pause, mains off; four flashes then a pause, a low battery; five quick flashes at each remote press, a lock-out. Off is closed and steady on is open. See every pattern on the ET manual page.
How do I fix a 12 V aux error on an ET Drive 500?
An aux low error usually means an accessory on the 12 V output, such as a beam, keypad or receiver, is faulty and drawing too much current. A technician disconnects the accessories one at a time to find it, then replaces it or its wiring. Read about power and aux errors.
Why does my ET Drive 500 beep five times?
Five quick beeps with five flashes of the status light, each time you press a remote, mean a lock-out mode is on, such as holiday lock-out. Press any holiday lock-out button, then any BT button, to switch it off. Read about beams and lock-outs.
