Electric fence repairs and installation in Kempton Park

Kempton Park's fence searches lean towards new installations, so that's where this page starts: how we plan and build a fence, what it typically costs, and the certificate that comes with it. We repair existing fences across the town too, Nemtek and JVA energisers included. 2-year warranty and a compliance certificate on every new electric fence we install.

Planning a new fence

A new fence starts with a walk around the boundary, because four decisions shape everything after:

  • Wall-top or freestanding. On a boundary wall, brackets carry the lines along the top. Where there's no wall, as on many smallholdings, the fence stands on its own posts and needs more lines to stop someone simply stepping through.
  • How many lines. More lines mean a taller, harder barrier, and a higher price per metre.
  • How many zones. Splitting the fence into zones means an alarm tells you which side to check, and a fault on one stretch doesn't switch the whole fence off.
  • The energiser and keypad, sized to the length and the number of zones, with a siren and, if you like, a keypad inside the house.

We work with Nemtek and JVA energisers, both covered on energisers.

How we build it

The makers' installation manuals are strict about how a fence is put up, and we follow them:

  1. Brackets and posts set level and secure along the whole run, with the lines tensioned evenly.
  2. Warning signs at every gate and at regular intervals along the fence, at least every 10 m.
  3. Gates fitted so they open without anyone touching a live line, with gate contacts so an open gate shows on the keypad.
  4. No barbed or razor wire close to the live lines.
  5. Earth spikes set at least 10 m from any other earth system, including the house's own.
  6. The energiser mounted where it's protected, with its backup battery, siren and keypad, then each zone tested and the readings recorded.

Fences on the smallholdings

Out to the north-east of Kempton Park the suburbs give way to smallholdings, and a fence there is a different job: hundreds of metres of boundary, often with no wall to build on, long grass under the bottom lines and lightning over open ground.

That calls for a freestanding fence with enough lines, an energiser sized for the length, and enough zones that a fault on the far side of the property doesn't leave the whole boundary dark. A lightning diverter, typically R350–R600 (Kandua) in the market (prices checked October 2026), protects the energiser from strikes along the line. Keep the ground under the fence cut, because grass touching the bottom wires drains the fence.

Repairing a fence that's already up

For a fence that alarms, has gone quiet or reads low on its keypad, we test it zone by zone, then repair what's found: broken lines, failed insulators, loose earths, gate contacts or the energiser itself. Every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

Nemtek comes up by name in Kempton Park's fence searches, and so does Stafix. Nemtek's Druid, Wizord and Merlin units are explained on our Nemtek page. Stafix isn't one of the brands we work on, so if yours is one we look at it before promising a repair, and quote a Nemtek or JVA unit if it's beyond saving. Safe checks you can do first are on electric fence not working.

Certificates when you sell

When a property with an electric fence changes hands, the change of ownership calls for an Electric Fence System Certificate, however old the fence. An inspection and certificate for a fence that already complies typically costs R850–R1 500 (Kandua, Completo) in the market (prices checked October 2026); repairs to bring a fence up to standard are extra. Ask your conveyancer what they need, then book the inspection early. More is on electric fence certificates.

Booking a fence technician in Kempton Park

For a new fence, tell us roughly how long the boundary is and whether it's walled; a few photos help us plan. For a repair, tell us the energiser's make and what the keypad shows. Same-day repairs are part of the week here when bookings allow, and the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover a fence that won't stop alarming. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

What is your fence doing?

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Electric fence · the alarm keeps going off

Most likely first

  1. The fence voltage has dropped below the alarm level: something is touching the wires, or plants have grown into the fence.

  2. The gate input is open: the gate isn't fully closed.

  3. The fence condition is poor: dirty or failed insulators, or wet insulators after rain.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

Never touch the fence wires or open the energiser. If the alarm won't clear, we'll find the fault on the fence.

Questions

Electric fence questions from Kempton Park

How much does an electric fence installation cost in Kempton Park?

It depends mostly on the length and the number of lines: in the market, a 6-line wall-top fence typically costs R95–R115 a metre installed, and a typical suburban home with 50 to 100 m of fence R12 000–R25 000 including the certificate (prices checked October 2026). We quote after walking the boundary. See typical costs.

Do you install Nemtek energisers in Kempton Park?

Yes, Nemtek and JVA, sized to your fence's length and zones and set up with a keypad and siren. We also repair existing Nemtek units, from the Druid range to older Merlins. Read about planning a fence.

Does a new fence come with a certificate?

Yes: every new fence we install is handed over with its Electric Fence System Certificate, which you'll need if you ever sell the property. See how we build it.

Can you fence a smallholding with no wall?

Yes, with a freestanding fence on its own posts, enough lines to be a real barrier, and zones so a fault on a long boundary is easy to find. We walk the boundary before quoting. Read about smallholding fences.
