Electric fence price per meter in South Africa
An electric fence is priced per metre, and the number of lines decides most of that price; the energiser, the certificate and the extras make up the rest. Here are typical South African prices for each, from installer price lists, published cost guides and shops, and what they leave out.
2-year warranty and a compliance certificate on every new electric fence we install
Six-month guarantee on our repairs

Price per metre, by number of lines
Wall-top fences run along the top of an existing wall; freestanding fences stand on their own posts, usually much taller. The more lines, the harder the fence is to get through or over, and the more it costs:
| Fence | Typical price |
|---|---|
| 6-line wall-top | R95–R115 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 8-line wall-top | R115–R125 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 10-line wall-top | R130–R145 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 12-line wall-top | R145–R165 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 18-line freestanding | R205–R225 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 24-line freestanding | R275–R295 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
| 30-line freestanding | R350–R400 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) |
Longer runs usually cost less a metre, and the energiser and battery are often priced on top of the per-metre rate.

What the cost guides say
Published cost guides give wider ranges that cover most of the same ground:
| Fence | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Installed in Johannesburg | R95–R220 a metre (Kandua) |
| Wall-top, 6–8 lines | R100–R170 a metre (Kandua) |
| Freestanding | R215–R400 a metre (Kandua) |
| All-in, short runs | R300–R400 a metre (ProCompare) |
| Typical suburban home, 50–100 m wall-top fence with certificate | R12 000–R25 000 (Kandua) |
The all-in price for a short run is higher a metre because the energiser, keypad and set-up are shared over fewer metres.
A 100 m fence around a home
Most Johannesburg homes need somewhere between 50 and 100 m of fence along their walls. Installer price lists put a home with a 100 m perimeter at R14 500–R25 000 (published price lists of Gauteng installers) all in.
The low end of that range is a plain wall-top fence with a single-zone energiser, a battery, a siren and the certificate. The high end adds lines, a more powerful energiser split into two zones, an indoor keypad, a link to the alarm system and lightning protection. Walls with many corners, steps or gates sit higher too: corners and steps take extra brackets and insulators, and every driveway needs buried high-voltage cable to carry the fence across it.
To estimate your own, pace out each wall the fence will run along, add the lengths, and multiply by the per-metre price for the number of lines you want. Then check whether the energiser and certificate are in that figure or on top of it.
Energisers
The energiser powers and monitors the fence. Bigger fences and more zones need more powerful energisers:
| Energiser | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Nemtek Druid 15 LCD | about R2 740–R3 540 (Takealot, NeonSales) |
| Nemtek Druid 13 LCD | about R2 940–R3 280 (Takealot, NeonSales) |
| JVA Z11 (1 zone) | about R3 070 (Takealot) |
| JVA Z13 (1 zone) | about R3 370 (Takealot) |
| Nemtek Merlin 4i with keypad | about R3 750 (Takealot) |
| Nemtek Druid 18 | about R4 490 (Takealot) |
| Nemtek Druid 28 LCD | about R5 190–R5 210 (Takealot, NeonSales) |
| Nemtek Druid 25 LCD (2 zone) | about R6 230 (NeonSales) |
| Nemtek Druid 114 LCD (14 J) | about R8 250 (NeonSales) |
These are prices for the unit alone. Installing, earthing, connecting and testing it are part of the fence price. Our energisers page explains how they differ.

Parts
- 12 V 7 Ah battery: R230–R450 (Takealot)
- Nemtek 1.6 mm aluminium wire, 1,000 m: about R1 070 (Takealot)
- Nemtek 6- or 8-line brackets: about R540–R970 per 10 (Takealot)
- 15 W siren: about R160 (Takealot)

The certificate

- Gauteng inspection fee: R900–R1 800 (Kandua)
If the fence doesn't comply, the repairs needed to bring it up to standard are extra. Our certificate page explains when you need one and what's checked.
Repairs
Most fence repairs are small: a broken or shorting line, a loose bracket, a gate contact that has stopped making contact, a battery that no longer carries the fence through a power cut. A new energiser is the bigger job, usually after lightning or a surge. Typical market prices:
| Repair | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Fault-finding call-out | R500–R900 (Kandua) |
| Simple repairs (insulators, a broken wire) including call-out | R700–R1 400 (Kandua) |
| Energiser repair | R800–R2 500 (Kandua) |
| Gate contact | R450–R900 (Kandua) |
| Complex faults or a new energiser | R1 500–R5 000+ (Kandua) |
Those call-out fees are typical of the market, not ours. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.
What moves the price
- The number of lines, and wall-top against freestanding.
- The length, and the number of corners and gates along it.
- The energiser: its power, and how many zones the fence is split into.
- Extras: a keypad indoors, a siren and strobe, a link to the alarm system, lightning protection.
- The earth, which needs proper earth spikes, more of them in dry or rocky ground.
- What's there now: an old fence to remove, or a wall that needs repair before brackets go on.
- The certificate, which every new fence needs.
What a fair quote includes
Before you compare prices, check that each quote names the number of lines and the metres, the energiser by make and model, the battery, the keypad, the siren and strobe, the earth system, the warning signs, and the certificate. A low per-metre price that leaves out the energiser or the certificate isn't low. 2-year warranty and a compliance certificate on every new electric fence we install.
