Gate motor repairs in Springs, Gemini motors included

Gemini makes sliding and swing motors, and its sliders come in three sizes:

None of the DC sliders has limit switches to adjust. They learn where to stop from two solid end stoppers on their first runs, and Gemini makes those stoppers compulsory, because the motor relies on them every time. Newer 12 V motors on the V90 control card can take Gemini's Gemlink device, which opens the gate from your phone. On the older AC slider, aluminium stops on the rack press a limit switch instead.

Every Gemini DC slider has a red release lever, locked with the key that came with the motor:

1. To open the gate by hand, unlock the red lever and open it. The gate now slides freely, so keep hold of it.
2. To put it back, move the gate to about halfway, close the lever, then push the gate slowly until you hear the gearbox click in.

Gemini's one rule: never release or engage the motor while the gate is moving. If the lever isn't fully home, the motor tells you with four flashes or beeps when you press the remote. If that won't clear with the lever closed, its switch needs replacing. Other flash counts are on Gemini gate motor problems.

Gemini's own maintenance list is mostly about the gate, and it applies to any sliding gate in Springs:

• The wheels should turn freely along the whole track, with no flat spots or seized bearings.
• The track should be clean and level, with a furrow so water drains away instead of pooling.
• Keep grease off the gate. Gemini advises against it: grease picks up grit, and the grit wears the wheels and rail.
• The rack sits 2 mm above the pinion, not resting on it.
• The end stoppers must be solid at both ends.
• Keep insects, water, mud and sand out of the motor.

After a summer thunderstorm, check the motor still responds; a surge can take out a control card or receiver while the battery is fine.
