Garage door repairs in Springs: springs, cables and what they cost

In Springs, "garage door springs" can mean the town or the part, and often it means both: a door that has suddenly turned heavy, in a house in Springs. We replace garage door springs and cables across the town, repair the doors and motors around them, and tell you the price before any work starts.

The springs that lift your door

Every garage door is balanced by springs, and the motor only has to steer a door they're already carrying. Which springs you have depends on the door:

  • Sectional doors use torsion springs on a shaft above the opening, which turn drums that wind the lift cables.
  • Tip-up doors use balance springs at the sides.
  • Roll-up doors have their springs inside the drum the curtain coils onto.

When a spring breaks, there's often a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil, and a door that's suddenly far heavier than it should be, or won't lift at all. Stop using the motor: it isn't built to lift the door's full weight, and running it can strip its gears. And don't try to adjust or replace a spring yourself. It holds the door's weight under tension, and letting that go by accident can cause serious injury.

Winter in Springs brings hard frost, and Centurion notes that springs left ungreased rust, after which temperature swings can change the friction enough to upset a motor. A door that's stiff on cold mornings is worth a service before a spring gives way. More on the different springs is on garage door springs.

Lift cables and drums

On a sectional door, two steel cables run from drums on the spring shaft down to the bottom corners of the door. When one frays, slips off its drum or snaps, the door hangs crooked or jams, and it can come off its tracks if it's forced. Cables are normally replaced in pairs, and the drums and bottom brackets they've been rubbing against are checked at the same time.

If a cable has just come off, leave the door where it is and see garage door cable came off drum for what to do first. The rest of a sectional door's hardware is on cables, rollers and tracks.

How your price is set

We price the repair once we've seen the door, because the same symptom can have different causes and a broken spring can bring a worn cable or a strained motor with it:

  1. Release the motor and test the door by hand. Centurion's manuals give the standard: a sectional door should take no more than about 10 kg of effort and drift no more than 100 mm when let go halfway; a roll-up door no more than about 15 kg.
  2. Find every worn part, not just the first one that failed.
  3. Give you the price, and do nothing until you agree to it.

Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

Motors and remotes

Once the door is balanced, the motor is easy work for us: a new battery, a board after a storm, limits that have wandered, remotes coded on the visit. If the old motor isn't worth repairing, our installed kits come with battery back-up and remotes, from the Centurion RDO Digital roll-up kit at R3 899 to the ET DC Blue Advanced sectional / tip-up kit at R5 599. Prices checked October 2026. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

Questions

Garage door questions from Springs

What does a garage door spring repair cost in Springs?

Fitted, a spring replacement typically costs R1 400–R3 200 in the market (prices checked October 2026), depending on the door and how many springs it needs. We give you our price after checking the door, before any work starts. See typical costs.

Why did my garage door spring go with a loud bang?

That's the sound of a coiled spring breaking under tension, usually after years of wear or rust. The door will now feel very heavy. Don't run the motor on it and keep clear; we replace the spring and check the cables and motor. Read about springs.

Can you replace garage door cables in KwaThema?

Yes, across KwaThema and the rest of Springs. Cables are usually replaced in pairs, with the drums and brackets checked at the same time. Read about cables.
