Gate and garage repairs in Springs

Springs is the eastern end of the East Rand, a mining town that became an industrial one, high on the Highveld where storms, frost and wind all leave their mark on gates and doors. We repair and install gate motors, garage door motors, electric fences, intercoms and CCTV across Springs, from the town centre to Bakerton and KwaThema.

Springs: coal, gold, then factories

Springs lies about 50 km east of Johannesburg, and probably takes its name from the many springs on the land the town was surveyed on. Coal came first: the Transvaal's first railway, the Randtram, was built around 1890 to carry it to the gold mines. Then gold was found on the farm Geduld, the town was proclaimed in 1904, and by the late 1930s its eight mines made it the largest single gold-producing area in the world. When the last mine closed in the 1960s, Springs turned to industry, and it still makes metals, chemicals, paper and food.

The mining boom also left Springs with one of the world's largest collections of small Art Deco buildings, most of them in the town centre. The 2011 Census counted 121 610 people in Springs, over about 184 km².

What Highveld weather does to gates and doors

Springs sits 1,628 m above sea level, with summer afternoon thunderstorms, hard frost in winter and a windy August. Each of those shows up in our work:

  • Thunderstorms bring surges and lightning, which take out gate motor boards, garage door controllers, intercom receivers and electric fence energisers. After a big storm, a motor that does nothing at all can have a damaged board rather than a flat battery. See gate motor PC board repairs.
  • Cold makes a lead-acid battery deliver less, so a battery that coped in summer may fail on a cold winter night, especially in a power cut.
  • Frost and temperature swings stiffen garage door springs. Centurion notes that springs not greased between their coils rust, and that temperature changes can then change the friction enough to upset a motor: a door that's stiff in winter and fine in summer.
  • Wind catches solid swing gates like a sail, and a motor reads the push as an obstruction and stops. The fix can be in the settings, the motor or an electric lock to hold the leaves.

All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

The properties we work on in Springs

  • Houses in the suburbs around the town centre, in Bakerton and in Geduld: driveway gates, garage doors and wall-top fences, each with its own motor, battery and remotes to look after.
  • Homes in KwaThema, where we fit new gate motors and fences as well as repairing old ones.
  • Townhouse complexes, with one gate for everyone, an intercom handset in each unit, and a receiver full of remotes that needs managing as residents come and go.
  • Factories and plants making metals, chemicals, paper and food: heavy yard gates that run all day, palisade and freestanding electric fences on long boundaries, cameras over the yard, and booms where trucks queue.

Each of these has its own page of advice on our service pages, linked below, and the technician who comes out knows which kind of property to expect from your job card.

Booking a technician in Springs

The job card is set to the East Rand, the area Springs is part of, so add your address and we'll know it's Springs. Tell us what's wrong and when it started; "since the storm on Tuesday" is useful, because it points us to a board or a receiver before we arrive. Add a photo of the motor, the door or the energiser if you can.

Same-day repairs are part of the week in Springs when bookings allow, and the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover a gate stuck open or a fence alarming at night: tick "It's urgent". Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

Questions

Questions from Springs

My gate stopped after a thunderstorm. Is it the motor?

Not necessarily: a surge can damage the motor's control board or its receiver and leave the motor itself sound. We test the battery and power first, then the board, and repair or replace what failed. Read about storms and gates.

Why does my garage door stick in winter?

Cold and temperature swings change the friction in the door's springs and hardware, especially springs that haven't been greased and have started to rust, and the motor struggles. A service, with the springs greased and the door balanced, is the place to start. Read about the weather.

Do you cover KwaThema and Bakerton?

Yes, along with the rest of Springs: KwaThema to the south-west, Bakerton to the east of the centre, Geduld and the industrial areas. See where we work.
