What's wrong with your gate?
Most calls start with one of these, and each has a guide to the safe checks you can do first:
- It won't open or close at all: power, battery, release lever or board. See gate motor not working.
- It beeps or flashes: the motor is reporting a fault code. See gate motor beeping.
- It opens but won't close: usually beams, or something in the way. See gate not closing.
- It opens or closes by itself: a stuck remote, an auto-close setting or a fault. See gate opens and closes by itself.
- The remote has stopped: its battery, or the receiver. See gate remote not working.
- It dies in a power cut: the battery or its charger. See gate motor battery not charging.
When the safe checks don't sort it out, book us: we find the fault, give you the price and fix it. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.
Sliding gates on a slope
Parts of the south are hilly, Mondeor among them, and a sliding gate on a sloping driveway brings one safety point worth knowing. When you release the motor to open the gate by hand, the gate is free to roll, and on a slope it will want to run downhill. Gemini's manual says to keep hold of the gate once it's released, and never to release or engage the motor while the gate is moving; on a slope that matters twice over. Open it slowly, keep your feet clear, and re-engage the motor before you let go.
A gate that creeps or drags on its own is telling you its track isn't level. That's a gate repair, and it saves the motor, battery and gearbox a hard time on every cycle.

Keeping the motor on the gate
A gate motor sits on the outside of the property, and the makers offer several ways to make it harder to steal or tamper with:
- A steel cage over a sliding motor, such as Centurion's for its D-series motors, bolted down so the motor can't be lifted off its base.
- Anti-lift brackets, set with a gap of under 5 mm above the gate, so the gate can't be lifted off its pinion and pushed open.
- Padlocks on swing motors, such as the Vantage's, fitted on the inside of the property, never the public side.
- Tamper alarms: some motors, such as ET's Drive 500 and 600, can raise an alarm if the gate is lifted or jammed open.
What each one stops, and how they're fitted, is on anti-theft brackets.
Keypads and remotes for the household
A keypad at the gate lets people in without a remote: family who've forgotten theirs, a domestic worker, a delivery. Centurion's SMARTGUARD keypad, for one, takes a master code and separate user codes that can be added and deleted, and has security settings worth using; the details are on the SMARTGUARD keypad manual.
Remotes are coded on the visit, and lost ones removed from the receiver so they can't open the gate any more. For more than a handful of users, ask about a receiver built to manage them.

What's it doing?
Likely causes
Gate motor · it's beeping
Most likely first
The mains power to the motor is off, so it's running on its battery. Centurion and Gemini motors give two beeps (or two flashes) in a row; an ET Drive flashes twice and gives a one-second beep every 15 seconds.
The battery is low. Centurion and Gemini motors give three beeps in a row; an ET Drive's status light flashes four times, without a beep.
Something is between the safety beams. A Centurion motor gives a single beep every so often and won't close.
The gate has hit something several times in a row, so the motor has stopped to protect itself. A Centurion keeps beeping until that's cleared.
A holiday lockout or a time setting is blocking the remote: the motor beeps once when you press it and the gate doesn't move.
On a Gemini, four beeps as the motor starts means the manual release lever isn't fully engaged.
Safe checks you can do
When to stop and book
If it keeps beeping with the power on and the beams clear, the battery, charger or controller needs a technician. Don't open the motor: Centurion warns that work by anyone unauthorised may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions
Gate motor questions from Johannesburg South
Do you repair gate motors in Glenvista and Bassonia?
Yes, along with Mulbarton, Mondeor and the rest of the south: batteries, boards, pinions, remotes and new motors. Book on this page and put your suburb in the address. See where we work.
My sliding gate rolls on its own when I release the motor. Is that normal?
On a sloping driveway, yes: released, the gate is free to run downhill. Keep hold of it, never release or engage the motor while it's moving, and have the track looked at if it creeps even when engaged. Read about gates on a slope.
Can you make my gate motor harder to steal?
Yes: a steel cage over a sliding motor, anti-lift brackets on the gate, or padlocks on swing motors, depending on what you have. Some motors can also raise a tamper alarm. Read about security.
