A five-minute check you can do safely

Before you book, a quick look often tells you what kind of fault you have. Do all of it without touching the fence:

  1. Read the keypad or energiser. Is it on, and what is it showing? An alarm on one zone points to that stretch of fence; every zone at once points to the energiser, its power or its battery.
  2. Switch the fence off at the keypad before going near it.
  3. Walk the boundary and look, from a safe distance: branches, creepers or grass touching the lines, a line that has snapped or sags, a cracked insulator, rubbish caught on the wires.
  4. Check the gates. An open gate, or a gate contact that has come loose, keeps an alarm going.
  5. Think about the battery. If the fence drops out in power cuts, the backup battery is likely worn; Nemtek suggests checking batteries twice a year.

If you find something you can clear safely with the fence off, such as a branch, do so and switch the fence back on. If not, book us. Never touch a line that may be live, and never open the energiser. The full set of checks is in the fault finder below.

The faults we repair

  • Broken and sagging lines, joined with proper fittings and re-tensioned.
  • Failed insulators and brackets, replaced along the run.
  • Earth faults, with spikes reset or replaced.
  • Gate contacts and sirens that have stopped working, or never stop.
  • Energisers and keypads that are dead, alarming without cause or damaged by a storm, repaired on the bench or replaced.
  • Worn backup batteries.

One fault isn't a fault at all: a fence that suddenly reads weak may simply have been left on low power. Nemtek's Druid, for one, has a low-power mode for times when children are playing near the fence, and it's easy to forget to switch it back.

All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

Upgrading an older fence

An older fence may be just a few lines on a wall with a single-zone energiser, while the needs of the house have moved on. Common upgrades:

  • More lines, to make the fence taller and harder to get over.
  • More zones, so an alarm tells you which side to check. Nemtek's Druid 25 and 28 are two-zone energisers, and two can be networked for four zones.
  • A keypad inside the house, so the fence can be armed, disarmed and read without going outside.
  • A siren and strobe where the neighbours, or an armed response company, will notice them.

A two-zone Nemtek Druid 28 LCD is typically about R5 190–R5 210 (Takealot, NeonSales) in shops, before fitting. We look at the fence before suggesting what's worth changing, and keep what's still sound.

Selling a house? The fence certificate

If a property with an electric fence changes hands after 1 October 2012, an Electric Fence System Certificate is required, even if the fence is older than that. It has to come from a registered electric fence installer, and a fence that doesn't comply has to be repaired before it's issued. Ask your conveyancer early what they need, so the certificate is ready when they ask.

Certified electric fence installer. An inspection and certificate for a fence that already complies typically costs R850–R1 500 (Kandua, Completo) in the market (prices checked October 2026). More is on electric fence certificates.

What is your fence doing?

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Electric fence · the alarm keeps going off

Most likely first

  1. The fence voltage has dropped below the alarm level: something is touching the wires, or plants have grown into the fence.

  2. The gate input is open: the gate isn't fully closed.

  3. The fence condition is poor: dirty or failed insulators, or wet insulators after rain.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

Never touch the fence wires or open the energiser. If the alarm won't clear, we'll find the fault on the fence.

Questions

Electric fence questions from Johannesburg South

Can you add zones to my existing electric fence?

Usually, yes: the fence is split into sections, each wired to its own zone on a multi-zone energiser, such as a two-zone Nemtek Druid 28, or two networked for four zones. We check the fence first and reuse what's sound. Read about upgrades.

Do I need an electric fence certificate to sell my house in Johannesburg South?

Yes, if the property has an electric fence: a change of ownership after 1 October 2012 calls for an Electric Fence System Certificate from a registered installer. Ask your conveyancer early. Read about certificates.

My fence alarm went off but I can't see anything wrong. What now?

Check the keypad for which zone alarmed and whether a gate was open, then look along that stretch, with the fence off, for anything touching the lines. If it keeps happening with nothing to see, book a test. Do the five-minute check.
