Which is the best gate motor in South Africa?
There isn't one best gate motor, and anyone who names one without seeing your gate is guessing. There's a best motor for your gate: the one built for its weight, its daily use and the power you have, with parts and service close by. Here's how to find it, using the makers' own figures.
1-year guarantee on every motor kit we supply and install
Six-month guarantee on our repairs
The best motor is the one that fits
Four things decide which motor suits a gate, in this order:
- The gate's weight, and how easily it runs.
- How often it opens, from a family home's few dozen times a day to a complex gate's hundreds.
- The power you have: mains at the gate, only a low-voltage supply, or solar.
- Who'll look after it: parts and technicians near you.
Brand comes after those. The three sliding gate makers whose kits we install, Centurion, ET and Gemini, all make good motors; each also makes motors that would be the wrong choice for a given gate.
1. Match the gate's weight
Every motor has a maximum gate mass. Choose one with room to spare, because a gate gets stiffer with age and dirt:
| Motor | Up to |
|---|---|
| Centurion D3 SMART+ | 300 kg |
| Centurion D4 SMART+ | 450 kg |
| Centurion D5-Evo and D5-Evo SMART+ | 500 kg |
| Centurion D6 SMART+ | 600 kg |
| Centurion D10 and D10 SMART+ | 1,000 kg |
| ET Drive 300 | 300 kg |
| ET Drive 500 and Drive 600 | 500 kg |
| ET Drive 1000 | 1,000 kg |
| Gemini Slider 500 | 500 kg |
| Gemini 24V Slider 600 | 600 kg |
| Gemini 24V Slider 800 | 800 kg |
Most domestic sliding gates fall comfortably within the 500 kg class. A long or solid steel gate may not, and it's worth having it weighed up properly rather than guessed.

2. Match how often it opens
A motor built for a family home will struggle at a busy complex gate. The makers say how much use each is built for, in different ways:
- Centurion D5-Evo: up to 150 operations a day; 55 for the Low-Voltage model.
- Centurion D10: up to 750 a day.
- Gemini: 150 openings a day for the Slider 500, described as residential; 250 for the 24V Slider 600, heavy residential; and 400 for the 24V Slider 800, light industrial.
- ET: by duty cycle, the share of time the motor may run. The battery-dependent Drive 500 is set at 25%, while the mains-powered Drive 600 is set at 98% for busy gates.
For a home, almost any of these copes. For a complex, an office park or a business, the daily figure matters more than anything else on the box.
3. Match the power you have
- Mains at the gate suits any motor.
- No mains at the gate: Centurion's D5-Evo Low-Voltage runs from a plug-in transformer in the house, and ET's Drive 500 can run from a 16 V AC plug-in transformer on quieter sites, which saves running mains cable to the gate.
- Solar: Centurion's D5-Evo can be charged from a solar supply, and Gemini lists its sliders as solar compatible.
- Load shedding: every one of these runs from its battery, and Gemini's 24 V manual lists lithium batteries as compatible. How long a battery carries a gate depends as much on the gate as on the motor; see how long a gate motor battery lasts.
Features worth paying for
- Setup and control from a phone. Centurion's SMART range is set up from a phone app, and Gemini's sliders work with its Gemlink system.
- Clear diagnostics. A motor that tells you what's wrong, through a display, an app or a clear beep code, saves time and money on every repair. Our beeping guide shows how much the makers' codes differ.
- Safety beams and a battery you can upgrade, whatever the motor.
Features you'll never use aren't worth paying for. A plain, well-installed motor on a good gate beats a feature-packed one on a bad gate every time.
4. Parts and service near you
A gate motor will need a battery, remotes and the odd repair over its life, so the best motor is partly the one that's easy to keep running. Centurion, ET and Gemini all publish their manuals, and their parts, from batteries to control boards, are sold by South African suppliers. All our spare parts are genuine.

Getting the right motor
On the job card, tell us the gate's rough size and material, whether it slides or swings, how busy it is, and whether there's mains at the gate. We'll recommend a motor for that gate, and tell you why. Our gate motor installation page explains how we fit one.
