Reading a Nemtek before anyone touches the fence

Nemtek is the energiser Germiston asks about by name, and a Nemtek usually tells you a lot before a technician arrives. On a Wizord, Nemtek's rule is simple: a light that flashes means the condition is happening now, and a light that stays on means it happened and has passed. So a flashing fence-alarm light means the fence is faulty at this moment, while a steady one means it was, and has recovered, which points to something that comes and goes, such as a branch moving in the wind.

The Druid range says the same in words and symbols on its display, and the Merlin can run with or without a keypad indoors. Reading what the box has recorded is the first thing we do, before anyone walks the fence. Every Nemtek model's lights and symbols are on our Nemtek page.

Nemtek's manuals are also clear that there's nothing inside the energiser for an owner to service. Leave the cover on: the safe checks are outside the box, in the fault finder below.

High-security fences for industrial sites

Germiston is a town of steel works, depots and rail yards, and their boundaries carry stock worth protecting. An industrial fence is built differently from a house fence:

  • Freestanding, and taller, with more lines: typical installed figures are R275–R295 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) for 24 lines and R350–R400 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) for 30, against R95–R115 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) for a 6-line wall-top fence.
  • On top of palisade or a wall, where there's already a physical barrier, so the fence adds detection and deterrence to it.
  • Split into zones, so the guard house knows which side of the site to check. Two Nemtek Druid 25 or 28 units can be networked for four zones on a long perimeter.
  • Kept clear, because a yard boundary collects wind-blown plastic, weeds and stored material against the wires, and each of those leaks the fence's power to earth.

These are market figures, not ours. Prices checked October 2026. For a site, we walk the perimeter with whoever runs it before we quote.

House fences in the older suburbs

In an established suburb, a wall-top fence lives alongside a garden that keeps growing. The faults we find on house fences follow from that:

  • Plants touching the lines, from trees that have grown since the fence went up.
  • Insulators cracked by sun and age, leaking at every bracket.
  • A joint that has corroded, often where a broken line was once twisted together instead of joined properly.
  • The backup battery, worn out, so the fence fails in a power cut.
  • A gate contact that sets the alarm off whenever the gate moves.

Each is a straightforward repair once it's been found. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

What fence work typically costs

  • Energiser repair: R800–R2 500 (Kandua)
  • Gate contact: R450–R900 (Kandua)
  • Nemtek Druid 28 LCD, in shops: about R5 190–R5 210 (Takealot, NeonSales)
  • Freestanding, installed: R215–R400 a metre (Kandua)

These are the market's figures, not ours. Prices checked October 2026. Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

New fences

For a new fence, at home or on a site, we agree the lines, zones and energiser with you, and build it to the makers' rules: warning signs at the gates and along the fence, gates that open without a shock, and earth spikes well away from other earth systems. Certified electric fence installer, and the fence is handed over with its certificate. If you're selling, you'll need a certificate for an existing fence too; see electric fence certificates.

Fences across Germiston

The 2011 Census counted 255 863 people in Germiston's 143 km². We work on fences across all of it: houses in the streets around Germiston High School and the older suburbs, and industrial sites from the town centre out towards Rand Airport and Germiston Stadium. For everything else we do in town, see Germiston.

Booking a fence technician in Germiston

Tell us the energiser's make and model and what its lights or display show; a photo helps. For an industrial site, add a contact and the hours we can work. Same-day repairs are part of the week in Germiston when bookings allow, and the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover a perimeter that's down overnight. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

Fault finder

What is your fence doing?

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Electric fence · the alarm keeps going off

Most likely first

  1. The fence voltage has dropped below the alarm level: something is touching the wires, or plants have grown into the fence.

  2. The gate input is open: the gate isn't fully closed.

  3. The fence condition is poor: dirty or failed insulators, or wet insulators after rain.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

Never touch the fence wires or open the energiser. If the alarm won't clear, we'll find the fault on the fence.

Questions

Electric fence questions from Germiston

What does a steady light on my Nemtek mean?

On a Wizord, a steady light means the condition happened and has passed, while a flashing one means it's happening now. A steady fence alarm points to a fault that comes and goes, such as a branch in the wind. Read about Nemtek lights.

Can you put an electric fence on top of our palisade?

Yes: an electric fence along the top of palisade or a wall adds detection to a barrier that's already there. On a long industrial boundary we split it into zones so the guard house knows where to look. Read about industrial fences.

Do you repair Nemtek energisers in Germiston?

Yes, the Druid, Wizord and Merlin ranges: we read what the energiser has recorded, test the fence, then repair the energiser or replace it if a repair isn't worth it. See how we start.
