Gate motor repairs in Brakpan, sliding and swing

A gate that has stopped often has a simpler fault than it looks, but finding it takes a method. Here's how we work through a gate in Brakpan, from the power to the board, what swing gates need that sliders don't, and what the new motors and repairs typically cost.

What a technician checks, in order

We start with the simplest explanation and work towards the costliest, so you don't pay for a board when the fault was a fuse:

  1. Power. Is there mains at the motor, and has a fuse or the isolator tripped?
  2. The battery. Does it hold its voltage when the motor runs, and is the charger putting power back in?
  3. The release. Has the motor been left released, or only half re-engaged, after someone opened the gate by hand?
  4. The gate itself. With the motor released, does the gate move freely along its whole travel, or does it bind, drag or catch?
  5. What the motor reports. Most motors flash or beep a fault code, and its manual says what it means.
  6. Safety beams. Are they lined up, clean and powered? A blocked beam keeps a gate open.
  7. Limits and settings. Has the gate lost track of where it should stop, after a power failure or a release?
  8. The board, last, once everything else has been ruled out.

Then you get a price for the repair before any work. Several of these checks are safe to do yourself first; our guide to a gate motor that isn't working walks through them.

Swing gates

A swing gate has one motor on each leaf, mounted between the pillar and the gate, and a control box that runs both. On a double gate the box closes the leaves one after the other, so they meet properly in the middle. When that goes wrong, the leaves clash or close in the wrong order, and the fix is usually in the settings, not the motors.

Swing gates have their own weak spots:

  • Hinges. A leaf that has dropped or stiffened makes the arm work harder every cycle, and the motor stops as if something were in the way.
  • Wind. A solid leaf catches the wind like a sail, which a motor reads as an obstruction. Centurion asks for an electric lock to hold leaves longer than 3 m closed.
  • Leaf size. Each motor has a limit: ET's Wingo, for one, takes leaves up to 3.5 m and 500 kg. A heavy, solid leaf needs a motor chosen for it.

Our installed swing kits are the ET Wingo single swing kit at R10 999, the ET Wingo double swing kit at R13 999 and the Centurion Vantage 500 double swing kit at R15 799. More on the motors is on swing gates.

Sliding gates and yard gates

On a sliding gate, the motor's pinion drives a rack along the gate, and the gate rolls on wheels in a rail. Wear in any of those shows up as a motor that strains, stops or runs without moving the gate. Around Brakpan's foundries and engineering works, a yard gate is usually longer and heavier than a house gate and runs far more often, so it needs a motor built for that weight and use, and a rail and rack that can carry it. The details are on sliding gates.

New gate motors

When a motor isn't worth repairing, we fit a new one sized to the gate, with battery back-up, remotes and the rack or arms it needs. Our installed sliding kits are the Centurion D5-Evo SMART sliding gate kit at R7 999 and the ET Drive 500 sliding gate kit and Gemini 12 V DC slider kit at R6 999 each. 1-year guarantee on every motor kit we supply and install. What's in each kit is on gate motor prices.

Gates across Brakpan

The 2011 Census counted 73 080 people in Brakpan's 183 km², and we work on gates all over it: houses around the town centre, shared entrances such as the Helderwyk Extension 8 complex, the works and yards near Bosman Stadium and the N17, and homes in Tsakane and Langaville to the south. For everything else we do in town, see Brakpan.

Booking a gate technician in Brakpan

Tell us whether the gate slides or swings, the make of motor if you know it, and what it's doing; a photo of the motor helps. Same-day repairs are part of the week in Brakpan when bookings allow, and the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover a gate stuck open after dark. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

What is your gate doing?

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Gate motor · it's beeping

Most likely first

  1. The mains power to the motor is off, so it's running on its battery. Centurion and Gemini motors give two beeps (or two flashes) in a row; an ET Drive flashes twice and gives a one-second beep every 15 seconds.

  2. The battery is low. Centurion and Gemini motors give three beeps in a row; an ET Drive's status light flashes four times, without a beep.

  3. Something is between the safety beams. A Centurion motor gives a single beep every so often and won't close.

  4. The gate has hit something several times in a row, so the motor has stopped to protect itself. A Centurion keeps beeping until that's cleared.

  5. A holiday lockout or a time setting is blocking the remote: the motor beeps once when you press it and the gate doesn't move.

  6. On a Gemini, four beeps as the motor starts means the manual release lever isn't fully engaged.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

If it keeps beeping with the power on and the beams clear, the battery, charger or controller needs a technician. Don't open the motor: Centurion warns that work by anyone unauthorised may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions

Gate motor questions from Brakpan

Why do my swing gate leaves bump into each other when they close?

The control box is meant to close one leaf before the other so they meet properly; if the delay between them has been lost or set wrongly, they clash. It's a settings fix, done on site. Read about swing gates.

Do you fit gate motors in Tsakane and Langaville?

We do. Sliding or swing, a dead battery or a whole new motor, the technician comes to Tsakane and Langaville just as to the rest of Brakpan; a photo of the motor on the job card means the right parts come too. See where we work.

What does a gate motor repair typically cost in Brakpan?

It depends entirely on the fault, which is why we check before we price. As a guide, Kandua puts an average repair at R750–R3 200 (prices checked October 2026). See typical costs.
