Electric fence repairs in Brakpan

Brakpan has a lot of ground for its size, and that means long fences: around works and yards as well as on house walls. We repair them across the town, from alarms that won't settle to energisers that have given up, and build new fences sized to the boundary. 2-year warranty and a compliance certificate on every new electric fence we install.

When the alarm won't stop

An alarm that keeps going off is the fence telling you its voltage has dropped somewhere, or that a gate is open. The usual reasons:

  • Something touching the lines: grass, a branch, a creeper, or wind-blown rubbish caught on the wires.
  • A broken or slack line shorting onto its neighbour or the bracket.
  • Failed insulators, leaking a little at every bracket until the total trips the alarm.
  • A gate contact that has worn, or a gate left open.
  • A weak earth, which makes the whole fence read low.
  • The backup battery, worn out, so the alarm sounds partway through a power cut.

What you can safely do: switch the fence off at the keypad, then look along the fence from a distance for anything touching it. Don't touch the wires and don't open the energiser. Our guide to an electric fence alarm that keeps going off goes through the checks in order.

An energiser big enough for the fence

On a long boundary, the energiser matters more than anywhere else. Two numbers decide it: the joules in each pulse, which hold the voltage up over distance and through leakage, and the zones, which split the fence so an alarm tells you where to look.

A small energiser on a long fence reads low and alarms at every bit of leakage; the cure is the right unit, not more sensitivity. We size it to the length, the number of lines and the zones, and every unit we fit is a type tested to IEC 60335-2-76, the standard both makers' manuals cite. More is on energisers.

Keeping a fence healthy

  • Check the battery twice a year, as Nemtek recommends.
  • Keep the ground under the fence cut and branches trimmed back from the lines.
  • Look along the fence every few weeks for cracked insulators, sagging lines and anything caught on it.
  • Test the alarm by opening a gate with a contact on it: the keypad should show it.
  • After a big storm, check that the energiser still has its lights and the fence still reads normally.

If a fence has gone a few years without attention, a service visit catches most of these at once. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

What fence repairs typically cost

  • Simple repairs (insulators, a broken wire) including call-out: R700–R1 400 (Kandua)
  • Complex faults or a new energiser: R1 500–R5 000+ (Kandua)
  • JVA Z13 (1 zone), in shops: about R3 370 (Takealot)
  • 15 W siren, in shops: about R160 (Takealot)

These are the market's figures, not ours. Prices checked October 2026. With us, no call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies. Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts.

New fences and certificates

For a new fence we walk the boundary, choose the lines, zones and energiser, and build it to the makers' rules, with warning signs, gates that open without a shock, and earth spikes kept away from other earth systems. Certified electric fence installer, and every new fence comes with its certificate. Selling a property with an electric fence needs one too: see electric fence certificates.

At a complex the perimeter fence is shared, so the body corporate or managing agent books the work and decides who holds the keypad codes and who gets the alarm. Tell us who that is when you book, and we'll arrange access and report back to them.

Fences across Brakpan

The 2011 Census counted 73 080 people over Brakpan's 183 km², and we work on fences all over it: house walls near the town centre, shared perimeters at complexes such as Helderwyk Extension 8, works and yards near Bosman Stadium and the N17, and homes in Tsakane and Langaville to the south. For the rest of what we do in town, see Brakpan.

Booking a fence technician in Brakpan

Tell us the energiser's make and model, what the keypad shows and roughly how long the fence is; a photo of the energiser helps. Same-day repairs are part of the week in Brakpan when bookings allow, and the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover a fence that won't stop alarming at night. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

What is your fence doing?

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Electric fence · the alarm keeps going off

Most likely first

  1. The fence voltage has dropped below the alarm level: something is touching the wires, or plants have grown into the fence.

  2. The gate input is open: the gate isn't fully closed.

  3. The fence condition is poor: dirty or failed insulators, or wet insulators after rain.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

Never touch the fence wires or open the energiser. If the alarm won't clear, we'll find the fault on the fence.

Questions

Electric fence questions from Brakpan

How powerful an energiser does my fence need?

It depends on the fence's length, its number of lines and how many zones you want: a short house fence suits a small single-zone unit, while a long boundary needs more joules and usually more zones. We size it on site. Read about sizing.

How often should I check my electric fence battery?

Nemtek recommends twice a year. A battery that no longer lasts through a power cut is worn out, whatever its age. See how to keep a fence healthy.

Do you repair JVA energisers in Brakpan?

Yes, JVA and Nemtek: we test the fence first, then repair the energiser or replace it with one sized to the boundary. Read about energisers.
