Whatever the motor, the door has to run freely and stay balanced by hand first; we check that, and repair springs or hardware before any motor goes on.

Garage motors keep working from their battery in a power cut, but only for so many cycles. Centurion's RDO Digital manual gives 12 to 20 operations, depending on the door, and ET's roll-up opener 25 operations within a day on its standard batteries. A battery that used to last a whole load-shedding slot and now dies after one opening is worn out.

When the battery is flat too, the door is opened by hand with the release, and every motor has one. On the roll-up motors we fit, the release cord is set no higher than 1.8 m off the floor, so everyone at home can reach it; once the power is back, the motor is re-engaged. A garage door is heavy and moves by itself, so on every repair and installation we check:

• That it reverses. With something solid on the floor under the door, it must touch it and go back up. Centurion's installation manual sets this test, and it's the one that matters most if children or pets are around.
• The force setting, so the motor stops at a light obstruction rather than pushing through.
• Safety beams, wherever the door closes by itself, as ET's manual requires.
• The release, within reach and working.
• A way out. If the garage has no other door, Hydro Doors calls for an escape lock on a motorised door, so nobody is trapped inside in a power cut.

Many garage door faults turn out to be the door rather than the motor: a spring that has broken or lost tension, a cable off its drum, a dented roll-up guide, worn rollers on a sectional door. We don't sell doors: a door is made for its opening by a door maker, priced on its size, material and finish. To quote one, a supplier needs the opening's width and height, the headroom and space above it, whether there's power for a motor, and whether the garage has another way in.
