How we trace a fence fault
A fault can be anywhere along hundreds of metres of wire, so we work from the box outwards:
- Read the energiser and keypad. Most modern energisers show what went wrong, and whether it's still happening or has cleared.
- Split the fence. On a fence with more than one zone, each is tested on its own, so the fault is narrowed down to one side of the property before anyone walks it.
- Measure along the run. With a fence tester, the voltage shows where it drops: at a plant on the wires, a cracked insulator, a joint that's corroded or a strand that's touching its neighbour.
- Check the earth and the gates. Earth spikes that have corroded or come loose, and gate contacts that have worn out, cause alarms that come and go.
- Test the energiser itself last, once the fence is known to be sound.
Then we repair what's found, from a joint or an insulator to the energiser itself. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.
Nemtek, JVA and other energisers
People in Boksburg search for fences by the name on the energiser, and two names come up: Nemtek and Stafix.
- Nemtek, a South African maker: the Druid range with its display on the box, the Wizord with a row of status lights, and the Merlin with its keypad. Each model's lights and symbols are explained on our Nemtek page.
- JVA, the other energiser brand we work on, mostly its Z-series. The two makes are compared side by side on energisers.
- Stafix isn't one of the brands we work on, and we don't hold its manuals. If yours is a Stafix, we'll look at it before saying whether it can be repaired, and if it can't, quote a Nemtek or JVA energiser sized to your fence.
Whatever the make, don't open the energiser to look inside: it carries mains power and stores a dangerous charge, even with the fence switched off at the keypad.

Factory, yard and long boundaries
Boksburg is a working town as well as a home one, and a factory or yard boundary asks more of a fence than a house wall does. It is longer, often freestanding rather than on top of a wall, and often runs along ground that isn't tended as closely as a garden.
What helps on a long boundary:
- More zones, so an alarm tells the guard or the owner which side to check, and one fault doesn't take the whole fence down.
- A freestanding fence where there's no wall, with more lines than a wall-top fence; typical installed figures are R205–R225 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) for 18 lines and R350–R400 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) for 30.
- Regular clearing of the ground under the bottom wires, where growth touching the fence is easy to miss on a long run.
For comparison, a 6-line wall-top fence, the usual house fence, is typically R95–R115 a metre (published price lists of Gauteng installers) installed. These are market figures, not ours. Prices checked October 2026.
When the power goes off
An energiser runs from the mains and keeps its own backup battery charged, usually a 12 V 7 Ah sealed battery, for the hours the power is out. That battery wears out quietly. The first sign is a fence that drops out or alarms partway through load shedding, when it used to last the whole cut.
A replacement battery is R230–R450 (Takealot) in shops (prices checked October 2026), and we test the old one before changing it, because a fence in poor condition drains a good battery faster too. Lightning is the other hazard: an energiser that died in a storm often needs a board repair, and a lightning diverter can be fitted to protect it next time.
What fence repairs typically cost
- Simple repairs (insulators, a broken wire) including call-out: R700–R1 400 (Kandua)
- Energiser repair: R800–R2 500 (Kandua)
- Gate contact: R450–R900 (Kandua)
These are the market's figures, not ours. Prices checked October 2026. With us, no call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies. Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts.
New fences and certificates
For a new fence we walk the boundary with you, agree the lines, the zones and the energiser, and build it with warning signs, gates that open without a shock and earth spikes kept well away from the house's own earth. Certified electric fence installer, and every new fence is handed over with its certificate.
Selling a property with an electric fence needs a certificate too: any change of ownership after 1 October 2012 calls for an Electric Fence System Certificate, however old the fence. If you're selling, arrange the inspection well ahead of transfer, so there's time for any repairs. The detail is on electric fence certificates.

Fences across Boksburg
The 2011 Census counted 260 321 people in Boksburg's 162 km², and we work on fences right across it: wall-top fences on houses in the streets around Boksburg High School and Hoërskool Voortrekker, shared perimeters at townhouse complexes, freestanding fences on the town's industrial yards, and homes in Dawn Park and towards Vosloorus. For everything else we do in town, see Boksburg.
Booking a fence technician in Boksburg
On the job card, tell us the energiser's make and model, what the keypad or display shows, and whether the fence is alarming, weak or silent; a photo of the energiser helps. A fence that won't stop alarming at night is an emergency: the 24/7 emergency repairs across Gauteng cover it, so tick "It's urgent". No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

What's it doing?
Likely causes
Electric fence · the alarm keeps going off
Most likely first
The fence voltage has dropped below the alarm level: something is touching the wires, or plants have grown into the fence.
The gate input is open: the gate isn't fully closed.
The fence condition is poor: dirty or failed insulators, or wet insulators after rain.
Safe checks you can do
When to stop and book
Never touch the fence wires or open the energiser. If the alarm won't clear, we'll find the fault on the fence.

Questions
Electric fence questions from Boksburg
Do you repair Stafix energisers in Boksburg?
Stafix isn't one of the brands we work on, so we look at the energiser first before promising a repair. If it can't be fixed, we quote a Nemtek or JVA energiser sized to your fence, and fit and set it up. Read about energisers.
Where can I get my Nemtek fence fixed in Boksburg?
Book us on this page: we come out, read the Nemtek's display or lights, test the fence zone by zone and repair what we find, from a broken wire to the energiser itself. See how we trace a fault.
Why does my fence alarm only at night?
Often moisture: dew on plants touching the wires, and snails on the insulators, which come out at night, leak more current, so a fence in marginal condition tips into alarm. Clearing growth from the wires helps; a fence test finds the rest. See how we trace a fault.
Can you split my factory fence into zones?
Yes: a long boundary is usually better as several zones on an energiser that supports them, so an alarm shows which side to check and one fault doesn't take the whole fence down. We look at the boundary before quoting. Read about long boundaries.
