Gate motor and garage door repairs in Primrose

Primrose is one of Germiston's older suburbs, laid out in the early 1900s as the gold rush drew people to the reef. We repair gate motors and garage doors across it, and put motors on gates and doors that were hung long before anyone planned to automate them.

An older suburb of Germiston

Germiston began in 1886 as a mining town on the farm Elandsfontein, and Primrose grew up beside it in the early 1900s, a residential suburb for the people the gold rush brought. Gold still passes close by: the Rand Refinery, opened at Germiston in 1921, is the largest gold refinery in the world. The 2011 Census counted 14 024 people in Primrose, over 4.54 km².

Heriotdale and the factories of Isando are its neighbours, with Eastgate Shopping Centre, Glendower Golf Club, SAHETI School and Germiston Stadium all within a few kilometres. We work in all of them.

Putting a motor on an older gate

A gate that was hung by hand, years before anyone thought of a motor, can usually still take one, as long as the gate is up to the job. Centurion's manual for the D5-Evo sets out what the gate needs first, and we check the same on any make:

  • It moves freely by hand, from fully open to fully closed, without catching or needing a shove.
  • It stays where you leave it. A gate that rolls or swings on its own, on a slope or a worn rail, will fight the motor.
  • Endstops at both ends, strong enough to stop the gate at full speed. Centurion calls them mandatory, because they stop a gate that overruns its limits.
  • Guide-rollers that hold it upright, and anti-lift brackets so it can't be lifted off the motor.

Where a gate falls short, the gate is fixed first: a motor on a stiff gate wears out early. As a market guide, automating an existing sliding gate, with the motor and labour together, costs R6 500–R12 000 (Kandua). Prices checked October 2026. Our own installed kits are below. Your exact price is set in a free quote before any work starts. No call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies.

Is your garage door ready for a motor?

The same rule holds for garage doors: a motor only moves a door that already moves well. Centurion's SDO4 manual gives a test for a balanced door, and it works as a check before any motor goes on:

  • Light and even by hand. Opening and closing should take about the same effort, and no more than about 10 kg of force.
  • It stays put. Let go of it partway and it shouldn't rise or drop more than about 100 mm.
  • No rubbing on the frame, the walls or the tracks around it.

A door that fails the test needs its springs, cables or tracks seen to first. Leave that part to us: the springs are under tension and can injure. Then the motor goes on, and lasts. More on doors of every type is on garage doors in Germiston.

Repairs to the motors already there

A gate or garage motor that's already fitted and has stopped is a different visit. The causes are familiar: a battery that no longer carries the gate through a power cut, remotes lost or failing, a rack or pinion worn smooth, a board that didn't survive a storm. We fix all of these, test a board before anything is replaced, and code remotes on the visit. All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs. The makes and faults we see are on gate motors in Germiston.

Questions

Questions from Primrose

Can you put a motor on my old sliding gate?

Usually, yes: if it slides freely by hand, stays where you leave it, and has endstops and guide-rollers. Anything that binds or rolls on its own is fixed before the motor goes on. A photo with the booking helps. Read about older gates.

How do I check if my garage door is balanced?

Lift it by hand with the motor disengaged: it should take a light, even effort both ways, and stay roughly where you let go of it partway. If it's heavy or drops, the springs need attention before any motor work. Read the balance test.
