Boom gate price in South Africa: barriers, poles and installation

A boom gate costs far more than a home gate motor, because it's built to open and close all day at an estate, a complex or a business entrance. The barrier itself has a clear shop price; installation doesn't, because every entrance needs its own plinth, cabling and loops cut into the road. Here are typical South African prices for barriers and replacement poles, what an installation involves, what common repairs come down to, and what a fair quote should cover.

What a boom barrier costs

Centurion Sector II barriers in a South African shop, typical prices
BarrierTypical shop price
Sector II 3 m, mild steel (component listing)about R26 200 (NeonSales)
3 m DC barrier, 430 stainless, loop detector and boom poleabout R32 000 (NeonSales)
4.5 m, same specificationabout R33 900 (NeonSales)
6 m, same specificationabout R36 000 (NeonSales)

The listings with a loop detector and boom pole are complete barriers; the mild-steel listing is the unit as a component. The other difference is the housing: grade 430 stainless steel on the complete barriers, mild steel on the component. Stainless costs more and stands up better to rust, which matters on a barrier that stands outside every day and gets knocked by cars. Prices checked October 2026. These are shop prices for the equipment, without installation, and they're the market's, not ours.

Why boom length changes the price

A boom is sized to the width of the road it closes, and the model is sized to the boom. In Centurion's Sector II range:

Centurion Sector II models, from Centurion's installation manual
ModelLongest boomRaise time (adjustable)
Sector II 3 m3 m1.2 seconds
Sector II 4.5 m4.5 m3 seconds
Sector II 6 m6 m3 seconds

A longer boom needs the model whose spring balances it, which is why the 6 m barrier costs more than the 3 m. The short model is also the fast one, which suits a busy single lane where cars queue. What each model does is on boom gates and the Sector II manual.

Installation: why it's priced on site

We found no reliable published South African figure for boom installation, and that's no accident: every entrance is different. A quote has to cover:

  • The plinth: a concrete base, cast to hold the barrier firm against thousands of lifts.
  • Loops: coils of wire cut into the road surface, which detect cars for free exit, keep the boom up while a car is under it, and close it after the car has passed. The road surface, and how many lanes, decide the work.
  • Power: a supply to the barrier, and cabling for the loops and any access control.
  • Access control: remotes, a keypad, an intercom or a card reader, and how they're mounted at driver's-window height.
  • Safety: beams, and the barrier's collision settings.

So a quote for "a boom gate" is mostly a quote for the site. Ours comes after a visit, priced line by line.

A snapped pole: the commonest repair

Booms get hit: a car that follows another through, a delivery truck misjudging the gap. A replacement pole is the commonest boom repair, and typically costs:

  • Replacement boom pole, 3 m rectangular: about R3 240 (NeonSales) in a shop

The pole has to match the length the barrier's spring is set for; a longer or heavier pole throws the balance out and wears the motor. Fitting it includes checking the balance and the limits, which is part of the job. Prices checked October 2026.

What other boom repairs come down to

Like installation, boom repairs have no reliable published price, because the faults differ so much:

  • The boom won't open for exiting cars, or won't close: often a loop that's been cut by road works or resurfacing, or a loop detector fault.
  • It lifts slowly, or bounces: the spring's balance, or a worn motor or gearbox.
  • It's dead in a power cut: the battery, or the setting that decides whether the boom raises itself when the mains fails.
  • Remotes or the intercom don't open it: the receiver or the access control, not the barrier.

A call-out for gate work typically costs R500–R950 (Kandua's 2026 cost guides). With us: no call-out fee when we do the work. If no work is done, a R650 call-out fee applies. More on boom faults is on boom gates.

Boom gates for complexes and estates

For a body corporate or an estate, the barrier is the smaller part of the decision. What matters more is how residents and visitors get through: remotes for residents, an intercom or keypad for visitors, loops for free exit, and what happens in a power cut so nobody is trapped in or out.

We quote complexes after walking the entrance with the trustees or managing agent, so the quote covers the barrier, the access control and the loops together.

What a fair quote includes

Check that each quote names:

  • the barrier's make and model, and the boom length
  • the plinth, and who casts it
  • how many loops, and the road work to cut and seal them
  • power to the barrier, and the battery back-up
  • the access control, and how many remotes
  • commissioning: balance, limits, collision force and the loop settings
  • what happens if something fails afterwards

All our spare parts are genuine, and every repair carries our six-month guarantee on our repairs.

Questions

Boom gate price questions

How much does a boom gate cost?

In a South African shop, a complete Centurion Sector II barrier with a 3 m boom and loop detector sells for about R32 000, and the 6 m version for about R36 000, before installation. Prices checked October 2026. See barrier prices.

How much does a boom barrier cost?

The barrier is only part of it: installation adds a plinth, loops cut into the road, power and access control, which is why there's no reliable published installed price and boom installations are quoted after a site visit. See installation.
