Two names, often asked about together

Nice and Hansa are two names people often search for together, and they cover quite different motors:

  • Nice is an international maker of gate, garage and barrier automation. In South Africa, ET Systems is now part of the Nice group, which is why newer ET products and manuals carry the Nice name. Nice's own sliders, such as the Robus, are also on gates here.
  • Hansa is an older name still found on gates in Johannesburg, often on motors installed some years ago.

We repair both. What we can tell you, and how much, depends on which motor you have, so it's worth a look at its label before you book.

The Nice-badged ET range

The Nice products we work from the makers' own manuals for are the newer ET range:

Nice-badged products, from the makers' manuals
ProductWhat it's forFrom the manual
Nice DC Blue Advanced, 2024 (Astute)Sectional and trackless tip-up garage doorsDoors under 15 m²; under 20 full cycles a day, at most 5 an hour; a 35-remote receiver
Nice DC Blue Advanced roll-up, 2024Roll-up garage doorsDoors up to 8 m²; a 25% duty cycle; a 31-remote receiver
Nice Wide M and Wide LTraffic barriersUp to 3,000 operations a day; pole kits of 4 m (Wide M) and 5, 6 or 7 m (Wide L); a 1,023-remote receiver
ET Nice swing controllerSwing gate motorsRuntime, delayed start between leaves, collision sensing, pedestrian opening

All of them use ET's BLU MIX rolling-code remotes, which also work with the older ET BLUE format, so an existing ET remote can often be coded in. The 2024 garage opener also takes several battery types, from lead-acid to lithium. The Drive sliding gate motors and the older ET models are on our ET page.

Nice Robus sliders

The Robus is one of Nice's sliding gate motors. We repair them, but we don't hold its manufacturer's manual in our sources, so we don't publish programming steps for it: guessed steps can clear its remotes or its travel settings. What fails on a Robus is what fails on most sliders:

  • The battery or power, if it has one, when the gate stops in a power cut.
  • The rack and pinion, worn or loose, so the motor runs and the gate jerks or stalls.
  • A gate that has become stiff, which the motor's obstruction sensing reads as a collision and stops.
  • Beams blocked or out of line, when it opens but won't close.
  • The control board, after a surge or lightning.

Our guide to a gate motor that isn't working goes through the safe checks in order. When it's the board or the settings, the programming is done on site, with the motor in front of the technician.

Older Hansa motors

Hansa motors are often found on older, heavier gates, and many have been working for years. We repair them, but as with the Robus, we don't hold Hansa's manuals, so we don't publish its programming steps or wiring; a technician programs and sets it up on site.

With an older motor, the honest question is parts. Batteries, remotes, racks and pinions can usually be found. Some control boards and gearbox parts can't, or not quickly. When we diagnose a Hansa, we tell you which applies, and if a repair isn't sensible, we price a new motor beside it, chosen for the weight of the gate. See repair or replace a gate motor.

Programming and resetting

"How do I program my Hansa?" and "How do I reset my Nice motor?" are two of the most searched questions about these brands. The answer depends entirely on the model:

  • Nice-badged ET products are set up from their control cards, as their manuals describe, and remotes are learnt into their receivers. Our ET page and the ET manual page cover the Drive range.
  • Robus and Hansa motors: we don't publish steps without the manufacturer's manual, because a wrong step can leave a gate that won't close or remotes that no longer work. A technician sets them up on site.

If you only need a remote added, a photo of the motor's label and of your existing remote tells us what to bring.

Nice garage motors

The 2024 Nice DC Blue Advanced is built for domestic garages: under 20 full cycles a day, and no more than five in an hour. Used harder than that, at a busy shared entrance or a garage that's also the main way in and out, it will cut out to protect itself, which looks like a fault but isn't. In a power cut, its manual gives under 70 cycles from a fully charged 1.5 Ah lithium battery. For door faults that aren't the motor, see garage door repairs.

What is your gate doing?

Pick what you're seeing for the likely causes, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book. Taken from the manufacturers' own manuals.

What's it doing?

Likely causes

Gate motor · it's beeping

Most likely first

  1. The mains power to the motor is off, so it's running on its battery. Centurion and Gemini motors give two beeps (or two flashes) in a row; an ET Drive flashes twice and gives a one-second beep every 15 seconds.

  2. The battery is low. Centurion and Gemini motors give three beeps in a row; an ET Drive's status light flashes four times, without a beep.

  3. Something is between the safety beams. A Centurion motor gives a single beep every so often and won't close.

  4. The gate has hit something several times in a row, so the motor has stopped to protect itself. A Centurion keeps beeping until that's cleared.

  5. A holiday lockout or a time setting is blocking the remote: the motor beeps once when you press it and the gate doesn't move.

  6. On a Gemini, four beeps as the motor starts means the manual release lever isn't fully engaged.

Safe checks you can do

When to stop and book

If it keeps beeping with the power on and the beams clear, the battery, charger or controller needs a technician. Don't open the motor: Centurion warns that work by anyone unauthorised may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions

Nice and Hansa questions

How do I program a Hansa gate motor?

We don't publish Hansa programming steps, because we don't hold its manual and a wrong step can clear remotes or settings. A technician programs it on site. Read more.

My Nice Robus gate motor isn't working. What could be the problem?

Usually power or the battery, a worn rack or pinion, a stiff gate the motor reads as a collision, blocked beams, or a board damaged by a surge. Read about the Robus.

How do I reset a Nice gate motor?

It depends on the model: Nice-badged ET products are set up from their control cards as their manuals describe; for a Robus we do it on site. Read more.

Where can I find Hansa gate motors for sale?

Gate automation suppliers can tell you what's in stock. If an older Hansa can't be repaired sensibly, we price a current motor, chosen for the gate's weight, beside the repair. Read about Hansa.

Will my old ET remote work with a Nice motor?

Often: the Nice-badged ET receivers use ET's BLU MIX rolling code, which also works with the older ET BLUE format, so an existing ET remote can usually be coded in. See the range.
