Gate motor and garage door repairs in Northcliff

Northcliff stands on Northcliff Ridge, whose hill, once called Aasvoëlkop for the vultures that nested on its cliffs, rises to 1,807 m, the second-highest point in Johannesburg. The suburb was founded on 3 October 1934 by Fred Cohen on part of the old farm Waterval, and its large homes are set around the steep slopes, with views to the north and the south. A steep driveway changes how a gate behaves, and on the ridge slopes come with the territory:

• Swing gates that open uphill need their arc kept clear of the driveway, and a leaf that drops on its hinges scrapes sooner than it would on the flat.
• Sliding gates need a level track. Where the driveway falls away, the rail has to be built up level, or the gate fights the motor on every opening and the battery, gearbox and rack pay for it.
• Releasing a gate by hand on a slope needs care: once the motor is disengaged, the gate is free to roll. Keep hold of it, and never release or engage the motor while it's moving.
