Steel palisade fencing prices, per metre

What steel palisade fencing costs depends mostly on its height and how many metres you need, then on the gates, the ground and what has to come down first. Here are typical installed prices per metre from published South African cost guides, for palisade, weld mesh and ClearVu-type mesh, and how to estimate your own.

Steel palisade, by height

Palisade is priced per metre, supplied and installed, and the height of the pales drives the price more than anything else:

Steel palisade, supplied and installed: typical market prices per metre
FenceTypical price
Steel palisade 1.2 mR900–R1 500 a metre (Kandua)
Steel palisade 1.8 mR1 800–R2 200 a metre (Kandua); R1 980–R2 420 a metre (LocalPros)
Steel palisade 2.4 mR2 000–R3 000 a metre (Kandua)
Steel palisade (all heights)R1 100–R2 400 a metre (ProCompare); R1 200–R2 500 a metre (Completo)
Steel palisade with pillarsR3 100–R3 800 a metre (ProCompare)
Labour only, palisadeR250–R700 a metre (Kandua)

A 1.2 m fence suits a front boundary that marks the line more than it keeps people out. At 1.8 m, palisade becomes a real security fence, and 2.4 m is for boundaries that need to be hard to climb. Palisade between brick or concrete pillars costs more a metre because of the pillars.

Weld mesh and ClearVu-type mesh

Mesh fencing, supplied and installed: typical market prices per metre
FenceTypical price
Weld meshR600–R800 a metre (ProCompare)
ClearVu-type high-security meshR1 300–R1 600 a metre (ProCompare); R1 200–R1 700 a metre (Completo)

Weld mesh is the economical choice for long runs and back and side boundaries. ClearVu-type high-security mesh, with its very small openings, is far harder to climb or cut, and it costs about as much as mid-height palisade. Our weld mesh page compares the two in more detail.

Gates and materials

  • Steel pedestrian gate: R2 500–R6 000 (Completo)
  • ClearVu-type panel kit (1.8 × 2.5 m), in shops: about R4 600 (Takealot)
  • Galvanised welded mesh roll (1.8 × 30 m, 50 × 50 × 2 mm), in shops: about R4 880 (Takealot)

Shop prices are for materials only. They don't include posts, concrete, fixings, delivery or the labour of setting posts plumb and in line, which is where most of the work in a fence is.

Estimating your own fence

Multiply the length by the price per metre for the height you want, then add gates. A 30 m run of 1.8 m palisade, for example, is thirty times the 1.8 m price per metre in the table above, before any gate or removal.

Measure along the line the fence will actually take, not the stand's length on paper, and include the street front, the sides and the back separately: they often deserve different fences. A palisade street front with weld mesh along the sides and back is a common way to put the money where it shows and where it matters.

What moves the price

  • Height, as the tables show.
  • Length. Longer runs usually cost less a metre, because setting up is spread over more fence.
  • The ground. Rock, slopes and steps take more time; a sloping site is stepped or raked, and both take more work than a flat line.
  • What's there now. Taking out an old fence, wall or footings adds labour and removal.
  • Pillars and a wall. Steel between pillars, or on top of an existing wall, is priced differently from a free-standing run.
  • Gates. Pedestrian and driveway gates, and whether a driveway gate will be motorised later.
  • The finish. Galvanised, painted or powder-coated steel, and the pale's top.
  • Add-ons. Electric fence brackets on top, now or later, so the posts can carry them.

Repairs and short runs

Not every fencing job is a new boundary. Straightening or replacing a few bent pales, re-setting a post a car has pushed over, re-hanging a gate that drags, or closing a gap after a wall came down are priced as jobs, after we've seen them, rather than by the metre. Where you already have the materials, the labour-only figure in the table above gives a feel for the work involved, though setting posts properly is the same job whoever bought the steel.

What a fair quote includes

When you compare quotes, check each one covers the same things: the height and type of fence, the number of metres, the posts and their spacing, the gates, removal of anything old, the finish, and making good afterwards. A low price per metre that leaves out gates or removal isn't a low price. Our steel fencing page explains how we install palisade, and repairs come with our six-month guarantee on our repairs.
